A Short History

Where to begin? I guess at the beginning. I was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and lived there until I was ten years old. Therefore I learned to live with five months of snow a year (Nov-March at least) and my first passion was ice hockey. When I was ten my parents moved to Columbus, Ohio where my father took an appointment as a professor at The Ohio State University. It was during that move that the Lord used two weeks at a Christian camp in Northern Ontario to convince me that I was a sinner who could not make himself acceptable to God no matter how hard I tried. It was there I came to understand that having been in church from the time I was two weeks old, having parents who were believers, and even trying to be nice to my younger sisters could not save me from the wrath of God against my sin. I needed a Savior and I found out that God had provided one in His Son, Jesus the Christ who had died on the cross to pay the penalty for sin and risen from the grave in victory over sin and death. It was there at that camp that I proclaimed my trust in Jesus and became a forgiven child of God.

Vicki's story is different. She grew up on a dairy farm in southeastern Ohio. Her family went to a small country church that taught them that if they were good enough they would go to heaven. When she was in her early teens her parents took the family to Faith Baptist Church. At this church Vicki heard the gospel for the first time. It was there that she understood that she could not do enough good to make her way into the approval of God and she trusted in Jesus Christ. At the age of 13 she had the joy of being baptized along with her parents, her sister, and one of her brothers all at the same time.

Both of us went to Cedarville College (now a university) after high school. I graduated in 1978 with a B.A. in Business Administration and Vicki graduated in 1979 with a B.A. in Comprehensive Bible. Even though we were at Cedarville at the same time we never dated. I knew who she was, she knew who I was and that was about it. However, in the summer of 1979, God brought us both to Scioto Hills Baptist Camp to work as counselors. It was there as I watched Vicki serve her campers that God brought us together and by the end of the summer we were engaged. We were married on March 15, 1980.

God has blessed us with five children. Chris (8-31-81) graduated from Cedarville in 2004 and married Lindsey Perkins. They live in Parker, Colorado where Lindsey teaches fifth grade and Chris is working on a Masters Degree in History Education at Regis University. Ben (3-14-83) is a senior at Western Michigan University majoring in Elementary Education. Stephanie (4-17-86) is completing an Associates Degree at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Tim (8-9-88) is a senior in high school and Elizabeth (7-2-91) is a freshmen in high school. The two of them are home schooled and went with us in 2004 on our short term trip to Cape Town.
